Retro Video Game Night

Retro Video Game Night is a quarterly retro gaming night that I organise with Ian Guebert aka "The Games Master" and the fine folk at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge. Here you can find information and photos of the previous nights, tournament winners and the games we played.

Upcoming Nights

Retro Video Game Night (Christmas Edition) - Friday 8th December 2017

Retro Video Game Night #011

Written by Aidy.

Date: 24th June 2016
Tournament: Mario Tennis - Doubles (N64)
Tournament Winner: David & Andy

This was the 2016 summer edition of the Retro Video Game Night and there's no better way to spend a summer's evening than in a dimly lit museum drinking beer and playing old video games! We got out a few classic "summer" games including Track & Field 2 on the MSX and California Games on the Sega Master System.

Ian pulled out all the stops with his doubles tournament on Mario Tennis and one lucky raffle winner walked away with a BBC Master.

Date: 11th March 2015
Tournament: Karate Champ (MAME)
Tournament Winner: Mr Jack

First Retro Video Game Night of 2016!

Unfortunately this was the first ever night that I was unable to attend but from all accounts it was a great start to the year. We'd decided the theme this particular evening around obscure fighting games and so Ian chose Karate Champ his tournament , which was won by Mr Jack.

Date: 4th December 2015
Tournament: Power Stone 2 (Sega Dreamcast)
Tournament Winner: Unknown

Our second ever Christmas themed retro night and possibly the busiest one to date. There were quite a few new faces at this one and we had a brand new burger van too!

Lunar Panda Xmas Edition was brought out of retirement once again along with Xmas Lemmings and a few other choice classics. Ian's shirt was up for grabs once again and was presented to the winner of the Power Stone 2 tournament at the end of the evening.

Retro Video Game Night #008

Date: 25th September 2015
Tournament: Micro Machines V3 (Sony PlayStation)
Tournament Winner: Tom Scott

Summer's over and we're easing our way back into the winter months once again. This particular retro night saw our first ever repeat tournament winner. Tom Scott, who won Ian's shirt at the Christmas 2014 retro night playing Bishi Bashi, won this evening's Micro Machines tournament. I think this is the busiest I've ever seen the 80s classroom for one of Ian's gaming tournaments.

I also brought along a modded version of Gimpy Bomber that you control with a foot pedal.

Retro Video Game Night #007

Date: 26th June 2015
Tournament: Sega Rally (Sega Saturn)
Tournament Winner: Ben Unwin

The summer retro nights always feel a bit strange. Might be a personal preference but eating burgers and playing video games always feels more natural when it's dark outside.

This was a pretty popular night never the less and one lucky individual walked away with a boxed Commodore Amiga that he won in the raffle.
